Innovately designed not to disrupt the archaeology, the new 11,840ft² Museum was built above and around the existing in-situ archaeological remains of the Roman thermal baths, discovered and excavated in early 1970. The pilae and part of the hypocaust were excavated and included in a permanent display in the ground floor.
The construction of the two galleries on the first and second floors feature an education room, study spaces, exhibit storage work spaces and a shop area at ground floor level.
The Novium won the RICS South East Award 2013 and the Civic Trust Award 2013.
