PROJECT PROFILES

Exchange Building, UoB

Client Name: University of Birmingham

Role: Cost Manager

Description

RLF was appointed by the University of Birmingham (UoB) for the refurbishment of the Grade II listed Exchange Building, formally the Old Municipal Bank, which is a historic/prominent building situated at 3 Centenary Square in Birmingham City Centre. UoB purchased the derelict bank building in 2017 with a view to creating a new city centre venue showcasing its work and research to the wider public.

The sympathetic conservation/refurbishment was completed in May 2021. During construction, several key challenges we readdressed in the modernisation of this significant heritage building. The key challenge was finding a careful balance between commercial value and viability whilst maintaining essential conservation principles, techniques, and philosophies.

This project is an exemplar project demonstrating our technical/professional capability in the modernisation/repurposing of a listed building.
